April 1st, 1944

Dear Betty,  Today must certainly be my lucky day, as I received three letters, from the nicest and prettiest girl that I know, and one from one of the swellest sisters a guy could have. Yes siree, I am floating on that old stuff they call air today, and conceited wow, I carry my nose so high they grounded me the other day. But all in all I consider myself one lucky guy, and I hope I can always say that. Can I? How in the holy Hamlet, am I going to show you my gratitude, I guess I will have to write you a letter each week, and two on Sunday. Yep, that’s what I’ll do, and you can bet on that. Say I know that Guy Grant Homer, we went to Horace Mann and Washington together. He’s a pretty good Joe. Ask him the next time you see him if he remembers the time I gave him a ride home from the Sunset golf course? You sort of stuck your neck out didn’t you when you said I was your uncle.
